“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain” (Psalm 127:1)
As we look at this passage of Scripture, this song of ascents of Solomon lets us ponder who has built our house. It is important for us to remember that “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…” (James 1:17). All else is vanity and unprofitable without God’s blessing.
God’s blessing:
- Causes our work to succeed (Deuteronomy 28:12)
- Gives us God’s presence
- Gives us the ability to operate in strength and power (Ephesians 3:20)
- Gives us the power to produce good, as God works in and through us (Philippians 2:13)
We must look to our Lord Jesus Christ for His blessing on our ministry, work, and family. Hebrews 12:2 gives us instruction to look to Jesus in our race of faith. He is our example of trusting God, of committing to the Father’s will, of overcoming temptation, of having loyalty to the Father, and of experiencing the complete joy of finishing the work to which God has called us.
We must believe in Him, love Him, and obey Him as dear children of the most high God in total obedience to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
We must remove everything from our lives that will hinder the blessing of the Lord. We are instructed to cast off the works of darkness, shun our old lives and habits, and put on the armour of light (Romans 13:12-14) . This allows us to be ready spiritually to perform all good works.
We must not rely on our own pattern in building God’s house. It must be according to His perfect plan. 1 Peter 2:5 tells us, “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood…” We are the Dwelling Place of the Holy Spirit. We are His Church, sanctified by Him for Him, to be presented to Himself at that Great Day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So, who built your house?
Except God build it, all that have laboured, laboured in vain.
