“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalms 91:1)
A family decided to take a vacation to an Island of Paradise with the intentions of riding some jet skis. There was only one problem. The family had never ridden jet skis, so they would have to hire an instructor.
After arriving at the island, they were soon informed it was time for them to head out on their adventure. The instructor warned the family that the particular area they would be traveling was full of coral reefs. And if struck, they could bring heavy damage to the jet ski or to one of them.
With this admonition, he assured them that if they would follow directly behind him, they would be safe. Because between their starting point and landing point, he knew of a passage free of the dangerous sharp-edged coral reefs. He called his passage, “The Secret Place.”
As Children of the Kingdom, we live in a world that is hostile to the Child of God and to the things of God. There are so many snares and traps that the god of this world has set for God’s people, to ensnare them, so that they may have little impact in this life. As the coral reefs were a danger to keep the family in our story from reaching their destination, so does Satan lie in wait to hinder the Children of God from growing up into the fullness that God is calling us into.
These dangers include a variety of things in this life and within our hearts; such as the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. To be walking under the power of these influences is to be striking every ‘reef’ on your journey to ‘Paradise’ (Heaven). We are called to behold His Glory; walking in Oneness with Him, and in the Power of His Fullness. This is to abide in the Secret Place. This is to escape the tempter’s snare.
We have many examples in the Scriptures of men who were hidden, as the prince of the power of the air tried to destroy them. One such example is Moses, who was hidden in a secret place until the time appointed (Exodus 2:1-10). Joash’s brothers suffered at the hands of the bloody, power-hunger Athaliah; but Joash was hidden in a secret place by Jehosheba until God restored him to his rightful position (2 Kings 11:1-12). Our Lord was soon to be destroyed by Herod, but was hidden until the indignation was past (Matthew 2:13-15). Need I say more of the countless times God has kept His People in the midst of extreme opposition?
This secret place is a place of Protection, Provision, and Power; outside of which, no one will ever make it to the other side.
Are you hidden in Christ? Do you abide under the Shadow of the Almighty? If so, I want to encourage you to follow close behind our Instructor, who is able to keep us from falling, and to present us faultless before the Presence of His Glory with exceeding joy. Amen!
