“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
Why Do You Read the Word of God? Is it to make you a Better Person? Or is it because you are a New Person?
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)
Nicodemus was certainly a man who regularly read the Word of God, because he was a Pharisee. It has been said that it was a mandate for a Pharisee to have all five of “The Books of Moses” memorized (The Pentateuch).
But in our text verse, and again in verse 7, Jesus informed Nicodemus that he personally must be born again:
“Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7)
And Jesus also told the Jews who disputed with Him about what was written about the Sabbath:
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” (John 5:39)
And Paul wrote:
“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.” (Romans 7:14)
We know and understand that the Laws of God are the very Words of God. And since the Law is Spiritual and man is carnal (non-spiritual); we should know also that something that is spiritual cannot make something that is non-spiritual better, especially to the point of satisfying or being equal to the Righteousness that is required by God.
One acronym for the Bible is “Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.” The Bible lets us know that there is life after leaving earth; and we know that this life should be exemplified while on earth.
Jesus said that the Scriptures “are they which testify of me” (John 5:39). And He goes on to say, “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life” (John 5:40).
Galatians 3:24 says:
“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”
Romans 3:10 says,
“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
A man’s attempt to make himself a better person (more righteous) by reading the Bible will not work. The old man needs to die!! But a New Person will become a Better Person by reading the Bible daily.
Ask God to make you New, which is for Better!!
