“We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:33b)

The Israelites said this to Moses when the spies returned home from spying out Canaan land: “We are but grasshoppers in their sight, as well as in our own sight. There are giants in the land.” (Numbers 13:28-33; Leviticus 26:3-8, 13). Our problem lies not in God’s Plan or His Power, but us. Our problem is when we have the “grasshopper complex.”

Moses said, “God I cannot speak plainly.” But look what God did with Moses: he did battle with Pharaoh (type of the devil) and was used of God to deliver His people from Egypt (type of the world: sin and bondage). Gideon said, “300 men? And that is enough to defeat the enemy?” Joshua said, “How can we defeat Jericho by marching around the city and shouting?” (1 Samuel 17:47; 2 Chronicles 20:15, 17; Ecclesiastes 9:11a) Simon Peter said, “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes but what are they among so many?” (John 6:9)

We ask God, “What can we do, the grasshoppers against the giants?” “What are they among so many?” “How can I make a difference?” Child of God, you have all you need to be used of Christ to do mighty works in His Kingdom. You cannot look at the size or quantity of the gift you posses. Instead look at what God can do with your gift in His Hand. Paul was a murderer of God’s people before he was called and converted. He was rude in speech, contemptible in looks, and had a thorn that made him weak. And yet, God used this one man to evangelize and establish churches throughout the Gentile world. It was said that he had turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6) with his message of Christ Jesus.

Child of God, never view yourself as a grasshopper; never under estimate your two fishes and five loaves of bread when yielded to God. Your flesh will say “you can’t” or “it’s too much for you, you don’t have what it takes to do this job.” Your family may even say you can’t, and worst of all even you may say you can’t, just as Moses said. And just as the spies said “we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13:33)

This attitude stems from: 1) a lack of knowledge of God (milk drinkers and not meat eaters); 2) not yielding to righteousness, but to the flesh; 3) not living in the Spirit, nor being led by the Spirit, nor walking in the Spirit; 4) not resting in His Promises and in His Word; 5) a lack of being tried and proven in tribulation; 6) not being fully surrendered to God, not submitted to His Word, not obeying His Word, not walking by faith, and not enduring in the confidence of the hope firm unto the end (Hebrews 3:6).

Child of God, you must: 1) believe (Hebrews 11:6) “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”  2) walk in love; 3) walk in the Light; 4)  walk circumspectly; 5) be filled with His Spirit (Ephesians 5:1-8); 6) be separated from the world (Romans 12:1-2; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18); 7) run this race with patience, laying aside every sin and weight that doth beset us (Hebrews 12:1); 8)  Set your affection on things above (Colossians 3:1-3); 9) be single eyed, you cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:14-33).

God does not need you to perform a miracle. But God has planned, purposed and designed to use the children of God, to deposit in them the Seed of God, and then to use the yielding of that Seed to Him to supply the need that presents itself. Not only is the need met; but you are rewarded and God is Glorified.

Child of God, give God what you have. Yes, there are giants in the land, but the giants in your life are as nothing when God fights your battles. David defeated the giant Goliath not with Saul’s armor or his sword or with military skill, but with 5 smooth stones, a sling and by doing it in the name of the God of the army of Israel. Joshua defeated Jericho, the walled city, by following the instructions given by God. John said in (1 John 5:4b), “and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” And our Faith, is none other than Christ living in us (Galatians 2:20).

When we give God what we have; when we give by faith; then God can perform the miracles. Are you giving your all in faith?
