“…the angels of God met him.” (Genesis 32:1b)
God had made a Promise to Jacob:
“And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;” (Genesis 28:13)
“And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” (Genesis 28:15)
God commanded Jacob to “Return unto the land of thy fathers (the Promise Land; the Land of Canaan)… and I will be with thee” (Genesis 31:3). God had Promised Jacob – I will watch over you; I will take care of you; and I will bring you again into the Land of Abraham and Isaac. Jacob had God’s Word.
To back up His Word to Jacob, God sent a Band of Angels (God’s Warriors) to Jacob, to allow him to know – I am with you; you cannot fail.
God reveals in His Word, from Genesis to Revelation, the nature and power of His created Army, His Angels. God uses Angels as Protection (as with Elisha and his servant); and as Tools of His Power to bring Judgment upon a people (such as Sodom and Gomorrah; also the Assyrians, 185,000 killed). Man is no match for God’s Angels. Man cannot see God’s Angels unless God grants him revelation. Man cannot kill an Angel. Man cannot overcome or defeat an Angel. (See Hebrews 1:6-7.) Study Angels and note the many references in the Scriptures; notice the Design and Purpose of God’s Angels. However, the nature of Angels is not the primary focus of this devotion.
The primary purpose is to show God assuring Jacob that He would keep His Promise, by revealing to Jacob that God’s Angels were with him and would protect him from all enemies, especially Esau.
God was gracious to Jacob to give him the revelation that His Warriors, which were Spirits and Ministers of Fire, were with him on his journey home.
The truth of the matter is – all of God’s People have angels with them on their earthly journey:
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)
You may not see these “ministering spirits… for them who shall be heirs of salvation.” But they are all around God’s People, 24/7.
Not only that, but every Regenerated Child of Grace has God the Spirit dwelling in him; bearing witness, guiding, and teaching him Truth 24/7 (Romans 8:14-16; 1 John 2:20, 27); and giving him the Power to Perform His Commandments (Philippians 4:13; Galatians 2:20):
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
How can a Regenerated Child of God fail? He cannot. (See Romans 8:29-39.)
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
“Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.” (Romans 8:33)
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?” (Romans 8:35)
“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (Romans 8:37)
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,” (Romans 8:38)
“Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:39)
God promised His People “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).
Child of Grace, lift up your head; start praising God for the witness in your spirit that you are Christ’s and Christ is yours. Praise God for the Token of His Word of Promise that abides in you. Praise Him that He has never failed you; His Word, His Promises are True and Amen in Christ:
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)
“Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;” (2 Corinthians 1:21)
“Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.” (2 Corinthians 1:22)
Plus, on top of Christ living in you, God has given you ministering spirits (or Angels) to watch over you in your journey. (Hallelujah!)
Stop your fear, your doubts; and be still and trust God. Lean upon Him (Proverbs 3:5-6); wait upon Him (Isaiah 40:28-31):
“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.” (Isaiah 40:28)
“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.” (Isaiah 40:29)
“Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:” (Isaiah 40:30)
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
Start praising God for His Presence in you; His Power is in you; and His Promises are feeding you. Therefore, you cannot fail. Take heart and be encouraged Pilgrim, on your journey today.
