God designed a Godly Home for two major Purposes – one in the physical realm, and the other in the spiritual realm:
First: the purpose of marriage in a Godly Home physically is to become one flesh, one unit, a whole, a complete circle. Man was made in such a way that he needs four things: (1) not to be alone; (2) a help meet; (3) to bear offspring; (4) to rule God’s creation. (See Genesis 1:26-27; 2:18-25.)
Second: the purpose of marriage in a Godly Home spiritually is to type out Christ and the Church; to be one spiritually, as well as physically.
God did several things to bring about His first purpose, that the husband and the wife become one flesh physically:
#1) God made Adam with a desire “not to be alone.” God gave Adam a desire to share his thoughts, his goals, and his affections and passions with a woman, his wife. Then God created Eve from one of Adam’s ribs. She came out of man; was created for man; and was given to man to be company to him.
#2) God carried His purpose out for Adam to be one, in that He gave him Eve, to be his help meet. Adam needed help in carrying out his mission to rule God’s Creation. The help Adam needed was filled in the position of a wife. The wife was not to do Adam’s work, but to aid him whereas he could do his work. The wife was to supply his every need in the home; to be his sexual partner; to dwell in and be a keeper of their home. She was to support him spiritually and physically.
#3) God carried out His purpose for Adam and Eve to be one through designing sexual intercourse to populate the earth, and to seal their unity in a physical consummation. When a husband and wife come together in the marriage bed, God does a miracle and seals them into one at consummation. Paul said in Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled…”
Sexual intercourse is a reality because of the design of the physical anatomy of male and female. Sexual intercourse is one of the greatest ways to stabilize the marriage and to melt husband and wife into one unit, one flesh, one body. Sexual intercourse is the God-ordained means to replenish the earth with people.
But sexual intercourse is not only the means of replenishing the earth with people, but it is also a means for a husband and wife to express their affection for each other and prove their commitment to each other. It is the greatest way for the transferal of the expressions of passion and love that God has created for marriage. It is the avenue by which a husband gives all of himself, his entire body, soul, and spirit to his wife; and by which the wife does the same to her husband.
#4) God carried out His purpose for Adam and Eve to be one through placing them to have dominion over His creation. This dominion is seen in God giving Adam the command to name all His creations; and in seeing that animals are subservient to man. Animals fear man; man is separated by the ability to reason, whereas animals cannot.
To bring about God’s second purpose – that the husband and wife are to type out Christ and His Bride, His Body, the Church; to become one spiritually – God instructed the husband of his position as head; and instructed the wife of her position as the body in submission to the head, her husband.
The husband carries out his position by patterning himself after Christ. (See Ephesians 5:21-33.) Christ loved the Church and gave Himself for her (Ephesians 5:25-27). He is the Church’s Head. Therefore, He instructs; He guides; He directs; and He commands. Christ nourishes and cherishes the Church.
The wife carries out her position by submitting her all to her husband, as the Church is subject to Christ “in every thing” (Ephesians 5:22, 24).
Being a witness of Christ and His Church is the highest calling a marriage has been given. If the husband and wife are “in Christ,” then they love Christ; and their marriage is in the position to receive His highest blessings.
This is the primary reason for this Study of a Godly Home. Remember, to have the highest blessings in Christ, you must follow Christ. You must be a disciple of Christ, forsaking all things, even your own life. You must follow Him in complete submission and obedience. And by His Grace, you must endure in this calling unto the end.
