(Psalm 4:6a) “There be many that say, who will shew us any good?”
King David brings to light another negative statement by the enemies of David and the people who had to flee with David in the conspiracy of Absalom to take over the Kingdom of Israel. The “many” of the text is the same “many” of (Ps. 3:2); those who said, “there is no help for him in God” (no help for David or for those people who followed him).
David said, ‘Our enemies are once again trying to get us to give up and say that we are in the wrong. They are saying, that God will not help us; nor will anyone else help us.’ This is a type of what the “old man,” or the “flesh” (where sin dwells), uses to try to deceive and turn back the child of God from the walk of faith. The flesh is constantly trying to stop the believer from walking in their God-ordained role as a person of faith by saying: ‘God is not with you; and God’s people are not with you. Therefore, you should quit and give up your so-called walk of faith. You should admit being wrong. You really don’t have what it takes to carry out God’s Plan.’
This brought on King David’s prayer request to God, (Psa 4:6b) “…LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.” What does the phrase “…the light of thy countenance” mean? The Hebrew word “ore,” translated “light,” means “illumination – luminary (bright, clear, day, light). The Hebrew word “paniym,” translated “countenance,” means as a noun, “the human face,” “the favor, approval,” “the expression of the face.” So, King David prayed, ‘God let Your favor; Your approval of us be manifested as clear as the noon day sun shines its rays of light upon the earth.’
Apply this to the believers today, who are being hunted and haunted internally by the “old man,” and externally by the nay-sayers, all of which are saying to turn back from the walk of faith. Their prayer request is saying, ‘Lord manifest in a plain way that Your Presence is with us; manifest that Your Love abides in us; manifest that You are working the Fruit of the Holy Spirit in us. Manifest that we live and move and have our existence by the Power of God that lives in us. Manifest to our enemies the Joy that we have in Your Salvation: (Ps. 4:7) (Psa 89:15) “Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.” Manifest the continually communion we have with Thee. Lord, manifest that these things that are in us and for us by You, are the very things that gives us a peace (Ps. 4:8); and a knowledge that we are being provided for, and protected by, God Himself (Psa 5:12) “For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
These things that you have manifested to us, and in us, and that You are working out of us; are the things that prove You are on our side; that prove You are our Guide, our Leader, our Protector, our Provider, our Shield and Buckler, even the Horn of our Salvation.
When the “old man” and the enemies of the cross hunt and haunt you to try to make you doubt your position in Christ (that you are His child); and try to make you turn from your walk of faith (saying that you would not be in trials and tribulation if God be for you); then, don’t try in your own strength to convince them; but turn to God – your Father, your Comforter, the Author and Finisher of your faith, your Hope of Glory, Christ in you; the Captain of your Salvation – to fight your battles with your enemies.
The Victory that you have is in the Victory of the Lamb of God, the Anchor of your soul; Who is already within the vail, and has won the final Victory. Keep walking in the Power of the Holy Spirit. Keep walking in the Faith (Gal. 2:20). Keep walking in peace and holiness and love of God. And keep walking with your motives and every decision and every action, not based on what the world says; but upon what God has said and ordained for you.
