“Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” (2 Corinthians 9:15)
Such a gift is truly unspeakable. A simple “thank you” seems so insignificant compared to the cost of our Saviour’s life. However, Jesus tells us that He freely laid His life down for us as the ultimate expression of His great love (John 15:13).
The “gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23b). The Bible is clear that this gift is free (Romans 8:32), as God’s love is free (Hosea 14:4). All we have to do is receive the gift through faith, which is also a gift (Ephesians 2:8).
It has pleased the Lord to give of Himself that we might have the gift of eternal life. Indeed, there is great joy in Heaven when this free gift is received by one repenting sinner (Luke 15:7). It should be equally joyous for us, and even more so, having received this free gift of God’s grace ourselves.
We are truly blessed. And yet the Lord is more blessed, for of His love has He given us of Himself; a truly unspeakable gift.
