Romans 8:29-39
There is no success in our service of God without a confidence, a security, that you cannot fail and be cast out of the love of God.
Until you have this witness in your spirit that God will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5c); that no one can take you out of the Hand of God (John 10:27-30); and that nothing can ever separate you from the Love of God (Romans 8:29-39); that there is no person, nothing physical or spiritual, that can separate you from the Purpose of God in Christ Jesus; until these things be in your spirit, you cannot carry out your service of God in a pleasing manner. You cannot even have confidence in your own spirit that you cannot fail and that you have done it to the highest standards of God.
When a soldier is fearful of failure, when a soldier has no confidence in his superior officers of back up, or that they will come to retrieve him in times of distress; then he serves only half-heartedly. He is not sure of anything, much less his own safety and worth to his country, if he has no security of life-saving help. In fact, he can’t really even trust his marching orders or his instructions as to how he is to carry out his specific duties on the battlefield. Just before the battle begins against the enemy, the soldier wonders:
- Has he understood his orders and the battle plan?
- Are these people really the enemy?
- Did he bring the right weapons to engage and defeat the enemy?
- Will his fellow soldiers stand or run in the heat of the battle?
- Have his supervisors planned for victory, or is he just to be a statistic of a useless war, for their own political gain?
- Is the cause worth dying for?
- What will be the rewards of victory?
It is the same for the soldiers of Jesus Christ. Christ is the Commanding Officer in charge. The war is against sin and evil. The orders are clear and the victory is sure, based upon the fact that the Victory is already won by the Commander in Chief, Jesus Christ. How the soldier is to war is plain; and the weapons and the correct armor has been issued (1 Corinthians 9:24-27; 2 Corinthians 10:3-5; Ephesians 6:10-18). Now he is to proceed into battle and engage the enemy, knowing (by experience, being fully persuaded) that he cannot fail. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4). Knowing:
(Romans 8:29-31, 33, 35, 37-39) “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. (30) Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (31) What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? … (33) Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth… (35) Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … (37) Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. (38) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
But the real proof is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and our resurrection in Him (Romans 1:4; 6:4; 1 Corinthians 15:1-). We that are born again have been raised from deadness in sin to life in Christ (Romans 8:2, 14-16; Galatians 4:5-6) and have the witness in our hearts that we are the children of God.
(Romans 8:14-16) “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. (15) For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (16) The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”
(Galatians 4:5-6) “To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. (6) And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
Therefore, having the witness of the Holy Spirit, the Power to perform His Commands, and the fruit of the Spirit daily in our life; we know we have the Victory. We know that we cannot fail; for our security is Christ Jesus, in His Resurrected Glory (John 17:21-24).
Therefore, soldier of Jesus Christ, lift up your head. Hold it up high. Raise the crimson, blood-stained banner of the Atonement of Jesus Christ in your mind, knowing that as Christ was raised from the dead, you have been experientially raised from dead in sins to walk in newness of life by the Power of the indwelling Christ. And now you can battle the enemy, knowing the Victory is already won in Christ. Knowing you cannot fail; knowing that nothing can separate you from the Love of God; knowing that you are secure in the Lamb of God for all eternity.
You are an overcomer in Christ. Shed your fear, your doubt, your defeatist attitude, your grasshopper complex; and serve Christ with Joy, Peace, and Praise. For you cannot fail; your security is based on the Atonement of Jesus Christ for your sins. Rejoice; rejoice in that Jesus was God in the Flesh; your Substitute, Sacrifice, and Savior! Hallelujah!
